During 2014 apparel and footwear specialist retailers continued to suffer as a result of the poor economic conditions in Portugal. This led to a substantial level of polarisation in the channel. On the one hand Portuguese consumers with lower disposable incomes continue to limit their spending avoiding impulse purchases and choosing cheaper items and budget brands wherever possible. At the same time special offers and price discounts were constantly on display in store windows. On the other hand affluent inbound tourists and high-income Portuguese consumers who were not adversely affected by economic difficulties contributed to the growth recorded in sales of designer apparel and luxury goods brands towards the end of the review period.
