New Study Juice in Mexico

(MENAFNEditorial)

Juice is one of the categories that has seen a new tax affecting its prices. President Enrique Peña released this new tax called IEPS Impuesto Especial Sobre Producción y Servicios (Special Tax over Production and Services) to levy almost all sugar-sweetened beverages with an additional MXN1 per litre. The main objective of the tax is to discourage the consumption of sweetened beverages in order to combat the increasing rate of obesity and diabetes II among the population especially after becoming the leading country in terms of the number of obese or overweight citizens in 2013.

Competitive Landscape

The competitive environment is led by three major companies which held a combined volume share of 70% in 2014. Jugos del Valle SA de CV is the leader with a 25% volume share closely followed by Grupo Jumex SA de CV with 23%. In third position is Grupo Industria Lala SA de CV which accounts for 22% of volume sales. Jugos del Valle is a subsidiary of Coca-Cola de México which benefits it by taking part in its negotiations in both the off-trade and on-trade channel and both Jumex and Jugos Del Valle benefit from having a presence in the country for several decades.

Industry Prospects

Juice is expected to grow by a 4% volume CAGR and 5% value CAGR at constant 2014 prices over the forecast period to reach MXN76 billion and 5 billion litres in 2019. 100% juice is expected to record the strongest growth over the forecast period due to consumers’ preference of a healthier lifestyle and the fact that it was not impacted by the new IEPS tax. However 100% juice is more expensive than other juices and therefore remains out of reach of many mid- and lower-income Mexicans.
