Egypt evacuates 525 citizens from Yemen

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Egypt has evacuated at least 525 citizens from the war-stricken Yemen since the Saudi-led military operation was launched against Houthi militias on March 26, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said in a statement here on Monday.

Roughly 145 Egyptians were evacuated today from Yemen through Saudi Arabia, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Badr Abdelatty.

The ministry is coordinating with friendly countries and private companies to evacuate more Egyptians from Sanaa by air, land or sea, he emphasized.

Egyptian diplomatic missions in Saudi Arabia, Oman and Djibouti are exerting more efforts to facilitate the process of evacuation, he noted.

According to official figures, the number of Egyptians in Yemen ranges between 6,000 and 7,000 workers.

Due to security concerns, Egypt started coordinating with Saudi Arabia and Oman last week for the return of Egyptians wishing to leave Yemen through land crossings.

Spokesman for the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen Ahmad Asiri said on Saturday that Egyptians are among other nationals scheduled to be evacuated from Yemen.

The coalition has been launching its military operations against Houthis for 12 days to restore Yemen's legitimacy.
