UNSC calls for protection of Yarmouk Camp


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) UN Security Council called for the protection of civilians in the Yarmouk camp for Palestinian refugees for ensuring a humanitarian access to the area including by providing life-saving assistance.

Ambassador Dina Kawar of Jordan, the President of the Council for April, told the press after the meeting, that the members of the Council condemned in the strongest terms the grave crimes committed by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and Al-Nusra Front against civilians in the camp.

Kawar said that the members will look into further measures to help in providing the necessary protection and assistance for the Palestinians.

Earlier today the UNSC president called members for an urgent meeting in regards to the Yarmouk deteriorating situation.

Since the beginning of this month, the Damascus camp, where some 18,000 people have already been trapped for over two years, has been engulfed by intense fighting.

UNRWA, Palestinian relief agency, said that the lives of civilians in Yarmouk have never been more profoundly threatened.

For over a year now, the besieged inhabitants of Yarmouk, including 3,500 children, have been reliant on UNRWA's irregular distributions of food and other assistance.
