OIC welcomes framework agreement on Iran nuclear program

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) welcomed on Saturday a framework agreement between the P5+1 group and Iran in Lausanne city, Switzerland, on Tehran's nuclear program.

In a statement, OIC's Secretary General Iyad Ameen Madani expressed his hope that a final agreement based on reference points could be reached as scheduled, lauding the framework agreement as it is a" diplomatic breakthrough" in Iran's nuclear program.

Madani, at the same time, affirmed the OIC's stance that the developing countries have the right to conduct research to produce nuclear power for peaceful purposes, without discrimination, in accordance with the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), the statement noted.

He reiterated the OIC's support for the establishment of a Middle East nuclear-weapon-free zone to achieve peace and security.

"Establishing a nuclear-weapon-free zone in the Middle East region in addition to the Arab Peace Initiative will form an integral and comprehensive approach to achieve peace, end disputes and counter extremism," he said.

Achieving this goal depends on the ability of the international community to put pressure on Israel to abide by the international legitimacy, he noted.

He reaffirmed the OIC's support for denuclearization, the elimination of all weapons of mass destruction and the need to settle the issue of nuclear proliferation through political and diplomatic means in line with the international law, the relevant multilateral treaties and the Charter of the UN.
