Rouhani: Iran to keep promises if others do same

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) Iran will live up to promises it made during the nuclear talks if the other side does the same, Rouhani was quoted as saying on Friday by the country's official IRNA news agency.

A framework deal was reached between Iran and the P5+1 countries on Thursday after extending the self-imposed March 30 deadline twice.

The sides held a joint press conference late Thursday to read out a framework deal, which included statements they intend to uphold before July 1 - the deadline to reach a final agreement.

According to Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif, the joint statement requires Iran's nuclear program and enrichment to be limited for specific durations, while its nuclear research will be carried out on an agreed-upon schedule.

"We are still at the beginning of the road," Zarif said Friday. "The continuation of our nuclear project is one of our goals."

In addition, Iran agreed to grant the International Atomic Energy Agency access to its nuclear sites.

"Iran is enriching uranium for the development of the country, not to threaten its neighbors," Rouhani said. "With this deal, all sanctions on Iran will be lifted and a new era will begin."

Rouhani added that the nuclear agreement is a "step toward interaction with the world."

Meanwhile, the P5+1 group - the U.S., the U.K., China, France, Russia plus Germany - stated in the framework deal that the EU will end implementing all economic and financial sanctions on Iran and the U.S. will cease applying secondary economic and financial sanctions, which had stumbled Iran's economy.

"Progress and security are not possible without cooperation," Rouhani said. "Some think that we must either fight the world or surrender. However, there is a third way. We can cooperate with the world."
