(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) "The attorney general has referred 48 Brotherhood members [three in absentia] over charges of killing a journalist and two others during events that took place in the eastern Cairo district of Ain Shams on March 28, 2014," the attorney general said in a statement.
According to the statement, Brotherhood elements allegedly opened fire during the protest, killing journalist Mayada Ashraf and two other people.
The attorney-general said that 25 of the defendants had confessed to instigating riots in Ain Shams and opening fire on citizens.
But Muslim Brotherhood leader Ahmed Rami accused security forces of killing the journalist.
"All those accompanying journalist Mayada said that she had been killed by gunfire from security forces while dispersing the protest," Rami, who is currently residing outside of Egypt, told AA by phone.
A forensics report on the death showed that the journalist had died from a gunshot wound to the back of the head.
The journalist's death caused public outrage, both domestically and abroad, prompting journalists to collect signatures for a petition to impeach the board of the journalists union.
The death of Mayada was also condemned by the UNESCO.
