Russia proposes amendments to UNSC draft resolution on Yemen

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Russia said Thursday it proposed amendments to a UN Security Council (UNSC) draft resolution on Yemen, most notably immediate cessation of hostilities and seeking a political solution for the crisis.

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said armed confrontations should immediately stop and parties involved in the conflict should seek a political settlement for the conflict.

He called on the UN special envoy to Yemen Jamal Benomar to be deeply involved in the settlement.

There is no other alternative than the political settlement in Yemen, said Lukashevich.

He said the Russian Consulate in Aden has been looted in the wake of the evacuation of diplomats and their families. The spokesman said security authorities in Aden promised to protect the consulate but it was looted because of the deteriorating security conditions.

A coalition of 10 countries, led by Saudi Arabia, has been bombarding the Houthi militias with the objective of protecting the Yemeni people and their legitimate leadership.

The military campaign received Arab and Western backing.
