Arab League condemns Israeli arrest of Palestinian MP

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The Arab League strongly condemned Thursday the arrest of Member of the Palestinian Legislative Council Khalida Jarrar by Israeli security forces from her house in Ramallah earlier.

"Arresting Palestinian MPs is an illegitimate measure by the Israeli government, which aims at terrorizing Palestinian citizens around the clock," Ambassador Mohammad Sabih, League's Assistant Secretary General for Palestinian Affairs, said in a press statement.

The Arab League condemns such acts against Palestinian lawmakers, which surpassed in its cruelty and brutality the racial political regime in South Africa against citizens, Sabih said, calling the international community, human rights organizations, international parliament, and all parliaments around the world to intervene immediately for Jarrar's release.

There are currently around 16 Palestinian MPs and Ministers in Israeli prisons, the Palestinian diplomat noted, affirming that this is a blatant violation to all international charters that grant lawmakers immunization from being arrested, which adds up to the Israeli violations record against the Palestinian sovereignty.

Israeli forces cordoned Jarrar's house in Ramallah before arresting her earlier today, seizing two laptops before they left.

Last July, Israeli authorities ordered Jarrar to be transferred to Jericho but the decision was overturned two months later during which the Palestinian lawmaker launched a sit-in at the Legislative Council headquarters.
