Hollande praises work of P5+1 in arriving at deal with Iran "in principle"

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) French President Francois Hollande on Thursday praised the work of the international community, and P5+1 Foreign Ministers, in arriving at "an agreement in principle" with Iran.

The agreement will settle the controversial nuclear issue and solve "sensitive activities" carried out by Tehran which raised concerns because of their potential nuclear military application.

Hollande spoke with President Barack Obama Thursday evening after the news of the agreement emerged, the Elysee Palace said in a statement.

The French leader said that the P5+1 accord with Iran was "an accord in principle on the parameters of a lasting settlement of the questions raised by the Iranian nuclear programme." France, throughout the whole negotiating process, took one of the toughest positions in the P5+1 and demanded solid and verifiable guarantees for monitoring, inspections and other controls on Iran within the framework of an agreement that aims to reduce the potential to enrich uranium and develop other nuclear projects.

Hollande noted that "the precise modalities of the implementation (of the deal) must be defined before June 30." He said France would watch carefully, as it has always done, that the June deal is put in place in such a way as to produce "a credible and verifiable" agreement so that the international community "is assured that Iran will not be in a position to obtain a nuclear weapon." Hollande also said that as sanctions against Iran are to be lifted under the accord, these sanctions "can be re-established if the accord is not implemented."
