Ban congratulates P5+1, Iran on nuclear agreement

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon congratulated Thursday the P5+1 and Iran on achieving a political framework that paves the way for an historic comprehensive joint plan of action to be achieved by June 30.

That comprehensive agreement will provide for substantial limits on Iranآ's nuclear programme and for the removal of all sanctions, Ban said in a statement issued by his press office.

"It will respect Iran's needs and rights while providing assurances to the international community that its nuclear activities will remain exclusively peaceful," he confirmed.

Moreover, the UN chief is convinced that a comprehensive, negotiated solution to the Iranian nuclear issue will contribute to peace and stability in the region and enable all countries to cooperate urgently to deal with the many serious security challenges they face.

Earlier today, the European Union (EU) and Iran announced an agreement that would allow the Islamic Republic to have a peaceful nuclear program in return of the lifting of sanctions by the EU and the US.

Last month, France Permanent Representative to the UN Francois Delattre said that Iran has the right to have civilian nuclear energy, but cannot acquire nuclear weapons.

Iran, he stressed, must make hard choices if it really wants to restore the international communityآ's trust, and he expressed the Councilآ's determination to achieve a robust agreement ensuring the peaceful nature of Iran's nuclear program.
