Omani sailors target medals in Abu Dhabi meet

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Talented Omani sailors will be feeling the heat when they jostle for a position on the Abu Dhabi start line at the 7th GCC Sailing Championships. The team has pledged their performance to His Majesty the Sultan.

Four sailors and seven young members of Oman Sail's National Youth Sailing squad will compete across four classes to improve on last year's stunning performances when the Omani team won gold and bronze medals in the Optimist Individual class a Laser 4.7 silver and gold in the Optimist Team Race.

The success placed Oman as one of the best youth sailing nations in the region an accolade the team will be working hard to build on in 2015 and highlighted the success of Oman Sail's Omantel Youth Programme co-sponsored by Oman Shipping Company.

Ahmed al Hasani and Ahmed al Balushi represent Oman in the Laser Standard class while Musab al Hadi and Ahmed al Wahaibi will fly the sultanate's flag in the Laser Radials fending off stern challenges from Bahrain Kuwait Qatar Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

Amongst the youth talented Layth al Mahrouqi who won a silver medal at the IODA African Championships last year and Ahmed Obaid al Wahaibi who won a gold medal in last year's GCC Championships will be battling it out in the Laser 4.7 class.

The 2015 squad also features the five-member Optimist team which was selected from performances at Mussanah Race Week in January and is the only sailing team selected by the Oman Olympic Committee to participate at the Asian Beach Game
