Jordan Foreign minister, Italian counterpart discuss ties, region


(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Affairs Nasser Judeh and Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Paolo Gentiloni, Wednesday, discussed bilateral relations and the challenges facing the Middle East and efforts to deal with them.

Judeh and Gentiloni stressed the importance of intensifying consultations between Jordan and Italy, especially as Jordan assumes the UN Security Council's presidency and enjoys historical ties with Italy at all levels. In this regard, Judeh noted His Majesty King Abdullah II's recent meetings with Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi.

They also discussed challenges facing the region, especially the fight against extremism and terrorism, and the importance of intensifying efforts and coordination to counter this phenomenon.

The two ministers reviewed the ongoing crisis in Syria and the absence of a political solution so far, as well as the recent events and developments in Yemen and military operations there to support its legitimacy.

Judeh and the Italian minister also reviewed the situation in Libya, referring to the resolution submitted by Jordan to the Security Council on behalf of the Arab Group, which the council had recently released with the number 2214.

They also discussed the latest developments in the Palestinian arena and the absence of serious negotiations to resolve the issue.

"Our continuous demand is not to forget the Palestinian issue," Judeh said, stressing the need to re-launch direct negotiations between Palestinians and Israelis leading to the establishment of an independent, viable and sovereign Palestinian state with East Jerusalem its capital, on June 4, 1967 lines in accordance with international terms of reference agreed upon and the Arab peace initiative.

In a joint press statement, Judeh said, "Italy is a friendly country and there are a lot of Italian investments in Jordan in various sectors, including in the universities, and the water sector. Italy has always supported us in bearing the heavy burden of hosting more than 1.4 million Syrians and providing them with services." The Italian foreign minister expressed his appreciation for the Hashemite leadership in dealing with the crises and challenges facing the region.

He pointed out that Jordan's participation in the Expo 2015, which will be held in Milan, Italy, next month, will be an opportunity to strengthen and promote the development of economic and trade relations between the two countries.
