Arab Group in UN calls for regional and international cooperation to fight terrorism


(MENAFN- Emirates News Agency (WAM)) The Arab Group of the UN in Geneva last night condemned the terrorist acts and gross violations of human rights being committed by Boko Haram.

In a statement during a special session of the Human Rights Council, Walid Doudech, the new Permanent Representative of Tunisia to the UN office at Geneva, and on behalf of the Arab Group, said, "The growing phenomenon of terrorist threats, violations and abuses of human rights committed by Boko Haram and other terrorist groups and their associated criminal practices such as cross-border weapon, drug, and human trafficking, requires a serious stance, as these risk the necrosis of the cosmic fabric of civilization."

The ambassador emphasised that the scourge of terrorism requires a personal national effort by every nation to coordinate, converge, and to promote regional and international cooperation and consultation.

He added that fighting the terrorism phenomenon should not be limited to just security efforts, but the various areas of human development, particularly investing in culture, knowledge and technology, which he said are the basic safeguards to address this scourge in the long-term in order to ensure international peace and security, and sustainable development.
