29 killed in W. Yemen factory fire near Saudi-bombed camp

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) At least 29 Yemeni workers were killed early Wednesday after a dairy factory close to Houthi sites hit by Saudi-led airstrikes burned down in the western Al-Hudaydah city, a medical source has said.

"The fire has left 29 workers dead and 25 injured, including 18 with severe injuries," Abdel-Rahman Jarallah, a local health official, told The Anadolu Agency.

Conflicting reports had emerged over the cause of the fire. Some sources said that it was caused by shrapnel from Saudi-led overnight airstrikes on a nearby air defense camp which had been seized by the Houthis.

Other sources have said that the fire had come from an artillery shell fired from the direction of Al-Hudaydah airport, which is under Houthis' control.

The factory's owners have yet to comment on the incident.

A week ago, Saudi Arabia and its Arab allies have started pounding Houthi positions across Yemen.

Riyadh says the strikes are in response to appeals by embattled President Abd Rabbu Manshour Hadi to "save the [Yemeni] people from the Houthi militias."

Fractious Yemen has remained in turmoil since last September, when the Houthis overran capital Sanaa, from which they have sought to extend their influence to other parts of the country.

Some Gulf countries accuse Shiite Iran of supporting Yemen's Houthi insurgency.
