Shiite militia to hand over Tikrit to local police

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) Iraqi security forces, backed by al-Hashid al-Shaabi, had wrestled control of Tikrit from Daesh on Tuesday.

Al-Hashid al-Shaabi Shiite militia will leave the Iraqi city of Tikrit for local police and Sunni tribal fighters to enforce security, a spokesman said Wednesday.

The Iraqi security forces, backed by al-Hashid al-Shaabi, had wrestled control of Tikrit from Daesh on Tuesday. The Sunni-majority city is the capital of the northern province of Saladin.

"We prepared a security plan that will be applied after defusing improvised explosive devices from the roads and buildings, as well as the withdrawal of our forces from central Tikrit to its outskirts," Karim al-Nouri, spokesman of al-Hashid al-Shaabi, told The Anadolu Agency. "We will leave the security file to local police and the sons of the city's tribes."

The militia will now stand on the outskirts of the city to block any attacks by Daesh, a strategy previously followed after the takeover of al-Alam and al-Dour villages near Tikrit, according to al-Nouri.

On Tuesday, Saladin province's governor Raed Ibrahim al-Jabouri had announced the return of work in government institutions in Tikrit for the first time since Daesh had stormed the city nine months ago.
