Players get set for Games gala


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Hosts Qatar will take on neighbouring Oman in their opening game of the handball competition at the 2nd Beach Games which kick off tomorrow.

In other games tomorrow, Bahrain will play Oman in what is going to be a three-way tie for top honours at Al Gharafa Sports Club.

Over 300 athletes from across the GCC will participate in the 2nd GCC Beach Games, which consists of 13 competitions across seven sporting disciplines.

The event will run from April 3 to 9, organisers said yesterday.

The multi-purpose complex at Al Gharafa Sports Club will host the volleyball, handball, football and 3x3 basketball events, while Katara Cultural Village, situated on Doha's stunning Corniche, will host open water swimming, rowing, sailing and air sports.

Khalid Al Mohannadi, the Games Executive Director, said that the Organising Committee has completed all managerial and technical arrangements to host 'an exceptional GCC Beach Games' in compliance with the country's good sport reputation.

Al Mohannadi said the opening ceremony 'will reflect Qatar's environment, heritage, tradition, culture and the country's relation with the sea'.

The Games Executive Director revealed that the Games' Mascot will be " Sodeifi" and no financial awards are allocated for the top winners.

"The winning athletes will only receive trophies and medals,' Al Mohannadi said.

"No doubt we are looking to reach exceptional success in hosting the second GCC Beach Games by the collective effort of all our sport federations. Likewise we hope to see our teams on the podiums," he added

Meanwhile, the Organizing Committee of the 2nd edition of GCC Beach Games 2015 signed four sponsorship agreements with three hotels - Ezdan, Ritz-Carlton and Retaj Al Rayyan - to be accommodation during the Games and the Cultural Village (Katara) as host location for the swimming, rowing and air sports competitions.

The signing ceremony attended by Mohammed Issa Al Fadalla Director of Public Relations and Media at the Championship, Sheikh Hamad bin Abdulaziz Al Thani, the official in charge of media and broadcasting, Salah Al Saadi, the chairman of facilities, services and information technology committee along with the representatives of the sponsors.

Al Saadi signed the sponsorship agreement with Katara representative, while Al Fadalla inked the agreements with the representatives of the three hotels.

Also yesterday, organisers said a high level delegation from Asian Rowing Federation (ARF) made a productive visit to the location of Sailing and Rowing competitions prepared for the GCC Beach Games.

Hassan Abdullah, Director of Rowing events and Assistant Secretary General of Qatar Sailing and Rowing Federation (QSRF), gave a brief information to the delegation members about the race track, competitions area, number of participating boats and technical arrangements.

The ARF delegation is on visit to Doha upon invitation from the QSRF to attend the sailing and rowing competitions at the prestigious second GCC Beach Games 2015.
