Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Tuesday that the hostage situation that took place at an Istanbul courthouse was "no minor issue."

"This is an incident that we can learn from and that needs to be taken seriously," Erdogan said. The president also congratulated the security forces and said authorities would investigate the incident thoroughly.

The hostage situation had ended on Tuesday, with two terrorists killed by police.

Prosecutor Mehmet Selim Kiraz was seriously injured and later died at a hospital, police said.

Kiraz had been handling the case of Berkin Elvan, the boy who was critically injured during 2013's Gezi Park protests and died in March 2014 after falling into a coma for 269 days.
