Palestinian factions welcome official ICC membership

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) A number of Palestinian factions welcomed on Wednesday Palestine's joining of the International Criminal Court (ICC), describing it as a milestone in their move for international recognition and campaign to punish Israel for its crimes against Palestinians in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

In a press statement, the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) said on Wednesday that it is an exceptional step forward to help the world hold Israel accountable for its violations to human rights.

The PLO called for achieving national reconciliation and integration in order to make this move more effective and fruitful, it added.

The PLO also stressed that it will continue exerting efforts to achieve this pressing goal as soon as possible, the statement said.

It underlined the significant role of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in following up all the ICC files and making urgent and efficient results in this respect, it made clear.

Commenting on the ICC membership, Hamas Movement said in a press statement that this move is a step to disclose the crimes committed by the Israel occupation against humanity, Palestinians and the Islamic sanctities in the occupied Jerusalem.

Under this step, the ICC prosecutor will be asked to start investigating the crimes committed by Israel, the statement received by KUNA noted, adding no one is above the law.

Hamas called on the Palestinians to unite together and cooperate with the non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and human rights organizations to file war crime suits against Israel, it pointed out.

The movement also urged the Palestinian Authority to shoulder its responsibility and work seriously on tracking the leaders of Israel, it said, adding Hamas also calling for the unity among Palestinians.

Meanwhile, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine saw the ICC membership as a great achievement and a victory for Palestinians.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the front underscored the importance of submitting rapidly the files related to the Israeli crimes against Palestinians during its recent aggression on the Gaza Strip last July and August.

The Palestinians are hoping that the ICC will investigate Israel's settlement activities in the West Bank and East Jerusalem and its military operations against Hamas in the Gaza Strip in July and August 2014, which killed about 2,200 Palestinians, many of whom were civilians.
