UAE Space Agency's delegation briefs Ajman Ruler on agency's goals, mission

(MENAFN- Emirates News Agency (WAM)) A delegation from the UAE Space Agency, led by its chairman Khalifa Mohammed Al Rumaithi, has briefed H.H. Sheikh Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Ajman, on the agency's goals and mission for developing the UAE space industry and its future role in knowledge-based economy.

During a meeting at the Ajman Emiri Court, Al Rumaithi, briefed H.H. Sheikh Humaid on the agency's plans for human resources development in collaboration with national and foreign education and training institutions.

He also explained the aspects of the agency's plan to send the Arab world's first mission to Mars by 2021. The Mars probe also represents the Islamic world's entry into the era of space exploration. The project is aimed at building the UAE's technical and intellectual capabilities in aerospace and space exploration as well as delivering new scientific contributions to humanity.

The unmanned probe will travel more than 60 million kilometres in nine months and will be launched to coincide with the UAE's 50th anniversary.

The programme would also further diversify the country's economy away from reliance on hydrocarbons, and increase local talent in aerospace.

President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan announced the founding of the Emirates Space Agency on 16th July, 2014.

Emirati investments in space technology have already exceeded AED20 billion.

These investments include TV broadcast company Al Yah Satellite, mobile satellite company Thuraya Satellite Telecommunications, and Dubai Sat, whose second satellite was launched in November last year.
