National unity a symbol of Jordan's strength, stability: Rawabdeh

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Senate President Abdel Raouf al Rawabdeh said Tuesday that Jordan's national unity is rock-solid and a symbol of its strength and stability that was manifest after the martyrdom of hero pilot, Muath Kasasbeh. He told a delegation of the National Forum for Awareness and Development that "relative equality," moderation and tolerance are some of the other key features of Jordanian society.

The Senate head pointed out that since its foundation, the country had embraced democracy "not as a political or cultural ideology, but a practice based on popular participation in governance." However, he added, that democratic action was temporarily put on hold at certain stages due to major compelling circumstances, such as Israel's occupation of the West Bank in the 1967 war.

Rawabdeh spoke about national priorities and the Kingdom's position towards regional issues, noting that the events and political change in the region made it incumbent upon Jordan to adapt, though without changing the key fundamentals of the state.
