Indian minister visits ancient city of Petra


(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Indian Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Nirmala Sitharaman and an accompanying delegation Tuesday visited the ancient city of Petra, and were briefed on archaeological and historical places in the Rose City.

The Indian minister, who was accompanied by the Indian Ambassador to Jordan, Anil Trigunayat, visited the narrow passage (Siq), the Treasury (Al Khazneh), the Nabataean amphitheater and court and the Byzantine church.

She listened to a historical and touristic briefing on the importance to the city of Petra, as one of the Seven Wonders of the World and a destination for tourist groups from around the world.

Assistant Chief Commissioner of Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority (PDTRA), Imad Hijazeen highlighted PDTRA's efforts, plans and vision to improve tourism services in the ancient city and promote it on the international and domestic tourism map.

The two sides discussed ways to promote the ancient city of Petra in the Indian tourism market and attract more tourists from India, as well as prospects for signing a twinning agreement between the city of Petra and the Indian city of Agra, where the Taj Mahal is located.
