Iraqi PM says ISIL poses threat to Islam

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar Al-Abadi said on Saturday that the ideology of the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) is an existential threat to Islam.

Addressing a conference of secretaries general of the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO), Al-Abadi said that "there are bodies encouraging this ideology and giving money to those (ISIL) who capture women to serve them and burn children." He underlined the need to pay more attention to education and culture in the face of deviant thoughts to protect Islam against them.

Al-Abadi noted that the Muslim World is facing dangerous challenges such as murder, displacement and destruction, stressing that burning libraries by ISIL had happened only by Mongols and Tatars.

He added this move is a hazardous defiance not only in Iraq but in the whole region and the world.

Meanwhile, Vice President Joe Biden and Al-Abadi discussed ongoing military operations across Iraq, including in Anbar and Salahuddine provinces, the Office of the Vice President announced.

Biden praised Abadi for his leadership in directing operations to clear ISIL from Tikrit, the announcement said.

"Both leaders expressed their strong support for continued cooperation between the Iraqi government and the international coalition," it said.

"The Vice President commended the patriotism of the Iraqi Security Forces and those Iraqis who have volunteered to join the fight against ISIL," it added.

Biden reiterated US support for Iraq's security under the Strategic Framework Agreement "and full respect for Iraq's sovereignty and independence," the statement said.
