UN chief arrives in Baghdad


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon arrived in Baghdad on Monday for an official visit to Iraq for meetings with this Arab country's leaders.

Upon arrival, Ban immediately held talks with Iraqi President Fuad Massoum on the latest developments of the political process in Iraq, security and the fight against the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), Spokesman for the Iraqi government Khaled Shawani told KUNA.

During his stay here, Ban is also expected to meet with Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Al-Abadi later today to discuss with him the political and security situation in the country, Spokesman for the Iraqi Prime Minister's Office Saad Al-Hedeithi told KUNA.

He added the visit is mainly meant to assess Iraq's needs from the UN and the international community in general to address its security issues and challenges, as well its efforts to maintain national unity and fight terrorism and extremism.

Ban was last in Iraq in August 2014.

Ban attended the recent Arab League summit in Egypt's Red Sea Sharm El-Sheikh.
