(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Hassan Al Thawadi, head of the Qatar 2022 World Cup local organizing committee, has welcomed FIFA's decision to hold the 2022 World Cup in November and December with the final on December 18.
In a press statement, Al Thawadi said FIFA put an end to the ongoing debate on the timing of the Qatar World Cup, adding that the organizing committee has always vowed to comply with FIFA decisions.
He added that work is going as previously planned including the cooling technology inside and outside venues, noting that it will be a legacy for the future and is based on research and investments.
On squeezing the tournament's schedule, the Qatari official said FIFA decided today to hold it over four weeks, which is a few days shorter than previous editions, with the international calendar taken into account.
Al Thawadi said construction work is underway for the host venues and they will be unveiled on time, adding that Al Rayyan Stadium will be announced in April and other stadia will be unveiled in 2015.
After meeting in Doha last month, a FIFA taskforce recommended that the tournament should be played in November and December 2022. The panel, headed by Asian Football Confederation President Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa, followed its meeting with another with the local organizing committee of Qatar 2022 World Cup, during which the latter briefed the FIFA taskforce on developments of World Cup preparations as well as the financial and legal developments of mutual work between the organizing committee and FIFA.
The Qatari government has pledged $200 billion over the next ten years for infrastructure including railway, airports, roads and stadia as well as the real estate and hotel sectors. it also dedicated 12 stadiums to host the major event, including five new venues and seven renovated ones at a total cost of $4.2 billion.
