(MENAFN- Arab Times) KUWAIT CITY March 23 (KUNA): The GCC ministerial meeting held in Riyadh last Saturday tackled 'the very dangerous conditions in Yemen' affirmed the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Khalid Suleiman Al-Jarallah on Monday.
The undersecretary said that it was normal for the GCC officials to address the Yemeni crisis considering that the country borders two member States of the Council Oman and Saudi Arabia. He was speaking to journalists on sidelines of opening a joint training course held by the Foreign Ministry with the Qatari Human Rights Committee. It is also normal for the GCC leaders to hold talks at the security level to discuss latest developments in Yemen 'where the recent developments have been quite dangerous' he said.
The country borders two States of the GCC thus it has special location and status in the eyes of the GCC countries he stressed. Asked whether the GCC joint military force 'the Peninsula Shield' would intervene in Yemen the undersecretary said 'I cannot say whether the force will or will not intervene in Yemen ... conditions in Yemen have been tackled at various levels.' Undersecretary Al-Jarallah alluded to the fresh UN Security Council statement urging the Houthis to withdraw from Sanaa and resume national dialogue as well as re-activate the Gulf Initiative. 'Therefore we have bases for tackling the Yemeni situation and we believe that these grounds must be adhered to.'
In response to a widespread belief that there is no point for holding dialogue in shadow of the Houthis' control of key installations in the country he said 'the situation in Yemen is not settled yet; rather it is turmoil. 'There is a legitimate president and credible huge demonstrations expressing support for him.' Moreover he added there is also 'rejection of the Houthis' hegemony on Yemen demands for normalcy restoration.'
Meanwhile regarding topics of the Arab Summit due in Cairo at end of this month Al-Jarallah said Kuwait will forward a report concerning the summit it hosted last March. The summit agenda deals with security issues joint Arab action and overhauling the Arab League he added. As to Syria's vacant seat he said this 'issue has not been discussed.'
