Gilbert Arizona – At a dedication ceremony in Gilbert Arizona on March 13th 2015 Army Ranger Sgt. First Class Cory Remsburg received the keys to his recently remodeled home; a six-month project that began in August 2014 and was recently completed. The retired armed forces veteran from Gilbert who was severely injured in 2009 in Afghanistan has been met with certain mobility challenges in and around the house – until leaders from Jared Allen's Homes for Wounded Warrior Foundation and Peak One Builders & Restoration a Scottsdale home remodeling contractor completed a home renovation project that was topped off by a surprise appearance from President Barack Obama.
This was not the first time that President Obama and Sergeant First Class Remsburg had exchanged pleasantries. The President of the United States of America first met Cory at a dedication ceremony on the beaches of Normandy in celebration of D-day in 2008. However in October 2009 his platoon came upon a roadside bomb in Kandahar Afghanistan. The explosion left shrapnel lodged in his brain. After years of rehabilitation centers and hospitals Remsburg now lives at home in Gilbert.
"There aren't too many people that I've met during the course of my Presidency that have inspired me more than Cory Remsburg" stated President Obama in a ceremony outside of his new home. "Cory heartily inspired me during his time as an Army Ranger while he was fighting hard to keep this country safe. In some ways I was even more inspired when he had to fight back against some devastating injuries he received defending our freedom and liberties. To watch day and day out the effort and positive attitude that this guy had - that's the kind of thing that keeps me going every day. To also see how this community has rallied together to help him and his family makes me proud to be an American."
The President's words echo the sentiments of Peak One Builders & Restoration founder Mike Christensen; a retired US Army Veteran himself who was personally inspired by Sergeant Remsburg's tenacity integrity and good-old-fashioned hard work ethic he displayed to be able to stand and receive the keys to his new home.
"Cory is the man – plain and simple" stated Christensen. "We've had the pleasure of working with Jared Allen's Homes for Wounded Warrior Foundation for a few years now and we've built some amazing homes for well deserving Veterans. Just knowing we are able to give back to those who serve after serving for over 20 years myself is extremely fulfilling. The sacrifice Cory has given to protect the freedom and liberty that protects everybody that lives in the Phoenix Valley and across the United States should always be recognized and rewarded. It was our pleasure to complete this project on behalf of Jared Allen's Homes for Wounded Warrior Foundation and the Remsburg family."
The Remsburg's newly remodeled home was approximately 1800 square feet but lacked many of the needed upgrades to ensure it was 100 percent handicapped accessible. Some of the specific projects undertaken included making sure all doors is widened cabinets & counter tops lowered bigger toe kicks on cabinets and roll-in showers for wheelchair access. However the team at Peak One Builders added a few extra perks including a beautiful back yard with pool equipped with a non-slip ramp and safety rails spa and Tiki Bar with an outdoor kitchen. They also added a 500 square foot guest house quarters. To complete the final touches on the home Angelica Henry Design created custom one-of-a-kind military inspired wall art and other personal touches that made this house into a unique home. Angelica Henry Design also provided a tremendous amount of support by helping to raise donations that were instrumental for this project.
Jared Allen's Homes for Wounded Warrior is a non-profit organization created for the sole purpose of raising money to build or modify the homes of America's injured Military Veterans so that they are handicap accessible and comfortable. Jared Allen of the Chicago Bears formed the organization in 2009 after he returned home from his USO Tour to U.S. Military Bases in the Middle East.
