UN mourns deaths of former Singaporean PM Lee Kuan Yew


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and President of the General Assembly Sam Kahamba Kutesa are deeply saddened by the death of former Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew.

In a statement, Ban offered his condolences to the family of the former Prime Minister, the Government and the people of Singapore.

Lee Kuan Yew was a legendary figure in Asia, widely respected for his strong leadership and statesmanship, Ban expressed.

During his three decades in office, he helped Singapore to transition from a developing country to one of the most developed in the world, transforming it into a thriving international business hub, he said.

In his statement the UN Chief expressed that as Singapore marks its 50th anniversary of independence this year, its founding father will be remembered as "one of the most inspiring Asian leaders." The Secretary General is grateful for the strong cooperation between the Government of Singapore and the UN, and looks forward to deepening this partnership, it concluded.

On a separate statement released by his press office, Kutesa expressed on behalf of all Member States and on his own, his heartfelt condolences to Yew's bereaved family and to the people and Government of Singapore.

"This is a great loss for Singapore," his statement added.

Furthermore, Kutesa said that the former Prime Minister will be remembered as a remarkable man of peace who transformed his country from a third to first world status and leaves a memorable impact on world affairs.

After a long illness, the 91-year-old Singaporean former Prime Minister passed away at Singapore General Hospital.
