No more water woes for Ras Al Khaimah residents

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The residents of Ras Al Khaimah (RAK) can now breathe a sigh of relief as a new water desalination station with a daily production capacity of 15 million gallons has opened in the Ghalila area. Earlier, the emirate has had a severe water shortage or supply cuts in several areas.

The project of Ghalila water desalination stations, valued at Dh320 million, is part of a thorough study of the water system in the country, according to UAE Minister of Energy Suhail bin Mohammed Faraj Al Mazroui.

"The Federal Electricity and Water Authority (Fewa) is now producing the best desalinated water which is safe to drink." A number of strategies to rationalise consumption of energy have been adopted, said Al Mazroui. "The systems being operated now reduce energy consumption by 20 per cent."

Mohammed Saleh, Director of the Fewa, said the new station opened in Ghalila will increase the daily production of water in the emirate to 33 million gallons. "Up to 20 million gallons of water will be stored in the station reservoirs on a daily basis, which will be used as per need." The station has been designed as per the latest water desalination systems in terms of initial treatment, desalination units, final treatment, engineering design, equipment, and automatic operation, he added. "The costs have also been taken into consideration, besides the reduction of energy and flexibility of maintenance," he said, adding that the reservoirs attached to the station cost Dh75 million. "People need not worry anymore about water shortage as the new water desalination station and the other existing one can meet the demand," said Mohammed Khalil Al Shamsi, Director of Corporate Communication at the Fewa. The Fewa started building the water pumping station on the Wadi Ghalila at the end of 2014, Al Shamsi said.
