Jordan, Russia to sign legal, political framework of nuclear project

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) The Jordanian and Russian governments will sign later this month a legal and political framework agreement to support Jordan's construction of its first nuclear power plants, says top nuclear official.

Russian state-owned firm Rosatom will construct two 1,000-megawatt (MW) nuclear power plants.

The deal which will be signed before the end of this month addresses the nuclear waste and spent nuclear fuel which Jordan can send back to Russia in the future and that was one of the reasons that made the government to select the Russian firm, says Chairman of the Jordan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA), Khaled Toukan.

He added that Russian side will supply the station with nuclear fuel for 10 years of its 60-year operational life while the Kingdom reserves the right to choose from where it wants to bring nuclear fuel for the remaining period.

Toukan said the Russian company will take on 49 per cent of the plants' $10 billion construction and operation costs on a build-own-operate basis while the government will shoulder the remaining 51 per cent.
