UAE- Cadence audience make up Night of a Thousand Voices

Dubai Vocal Ensemble. Photos byMohammad Mustafa Khan Dubai Vocal Ensemble crooned their way to open the gala evening of ChoirFest Middle East 2015 titled Night of a Thousand voices at Kempinski Hotel & Residences The Palm Jumeirah. Winner of the Choir of the Year 2014 Dubai Vocal Ensemble is a Filipino choir who have found a purpose in singing together. After performing a piece in English and Tagalog they set the tone and the stage for the grand evening of song.
Walking up the stage looking dapper in their sleek black suits and feathered hats the all-men band from Canada that goes by the name Cadence made up of David Ross Lucas and Kurt charmed the audience instantly. Staying true to its theme the A Cappella singers made sure the audience too was involved in the concert making it a Night of a Thousand voices indeed.
Starting off with a ‘vocal chords warm-up’ the four asked the audience to raise their hands sway them around followed by a request scat a little with a few ‘fa la la las’ here and there engaging the crowd of about four hundred.
They had the crowd amused with their 1500s style rendition of Justin Bieber’s hit track Baby (watch video below).
Then came on Suzzie Vango vocal animateur conductor and adjudicator whose work as a soloist has taken her to some of the UK’s finest cathedrals and venues such as London’s Royal Albert Hall. Suzzie is also a conductor of The National Children’s Choir of Great Britain Ex Cathedra Girls Academy.
She took to the stage with a group of singer from the UAE Lebanon and Afghanistan a pleasantly surprising mix.
The students from Dubai English College too made their voices resound at the lawns of the hotel.
The all-men A Capella band from Canada that goes by the name Cadence made up of David Ross Luca and Kurt Cadence came on again to entertain the crowds but this time in more casual an attire sharing the Canadian heritage in song and then ending their gig with Van Morrison’s famous tune Brown Eyed Girl.
Bringing the evening of music to a close the stage held choirs from Afghanistan Lebanon Iran UAE along with Cadence who were all kept in tune by the widely acclaimed composer Peter Allwood.
Peter’s recent compositions have been commissioned for performance in India and the Dartington Festival. Peter’s musicals musical Pendragon has had performances around the world including Hong Kong Japan London Edinburgh and New York.
ChoirFest Middle East ends today March 14 with Choir of the Year a competition where battle it out to be crowned with the prestigious award.
Cadence will judge choirs on how well they communicate the music as well as their technical ability.
