Oman spikers lose in final


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Oman went down fighting to UAE 1-3 (16-25 25-20 25-27 21-25) to claim a silver in the volleyball event as the curtains came down on the fourth GCC Women's Games at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex (SQSC) on Wednesday.

The volleyball silver and a bronze in bowling on the final day ensured Oman an overall runner-up finish at the Games with Bahrain taking the crown.

Bahrain won a total of 20 gold eight silver and four bronze medals to emerge on top. Oman had ten gold nine silver and 14 bronze medals. UAE ended up third with nine gold nine silver and four bronze medals.

In the volleyball contest that had a tense finish UAE began aggressively to claim the first set. Oman fought back well to level at 1-1. A close third set that ended 27-25 in favour of UAE gave the visiting team the edge as it hung on to win the fourth set and the title. UAE won the gold with 12 points while Oman had eight points. Bahrain claimed the bronze with seven points.

In the only other medal at stake on the final day of the 11-day Games Oman's bowler Aisha al Shibani managed to bag a bronze in the masters category at the Oman Bowling Centre.

The category featured the top eight bowlers who qualified after their performances in the individual doubles and team categories.

In a thrilling fight between Bahrain's Nadia al Awadhi Kuwait's Hanadi al Mezaiel and Aisha the Omani led till the penultimate round of the eight-round event. However in the final tie-breaker round Nadia who had earlier won the individual gold claimed the title by edging past Hanadi and leaving Aisha with a bronze.

After the awards ceremony of volleyball event a closing ceremony was held at the SQSC.

During the ceremony Sayyida Sana al Busaidi the chairwoman of the Oman Women's Committee handed over the host nation's flag to Ahlam al Manea the chairwoman of the Qatar Women's Sport Committee as Qatar will host the next edition.

Also present was Ahmad al Humaidi director of the GCC sports affairs department.

The ceremony was presided over by H E Sheikh Saad al Saadi the Minister of Sports Affairs in the presence of Sheikha Naima al Sabah the chairwoman of the GCC Women's Committee H E Sheikh Rashad al Hinai the Undersecretary at the sports ministry Sheikh Badr al Rowas the Oman Volleyball Association's chief and other dignitaries.
