British unemployment remains at 5.7 percent in January


(MENAFN) The British unemployment rate remained at 5.7 percent in the three months ending January 2015, keeping the same rate registered in the quarter to December 2014, Xinhua reported.

The unemployment rate is slightly higher than the market estimation consensus of 5.6 percent for the period, data released from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed.

There were a total of 1.86 million unemployed people, which is 102,000 fewer than from August to October 2014, and 479,000 less than a year earlier, the data revealed.

Claims for unemployment benefits fell by 25,100 to a total of 816,800 in February 2015 from the previous month. Compared with a year earlier, it was down by 358,300, data also showed.
