Crackdown on crowded buildings in Abu Dhabi

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The Abu Dhabi City Municipality has launched a campaign to crack down on poorly maintained, unhygienic accommodation units in Al Wathbah and Bani Yas areas of the emirate.

The municipality is conducting a new inspection campaign targeting shoddy-looking and poorly maintained buildings in these two areas and issued warnings to those found violating public health rules and spoiling the look of the city.

Over the past two months, the municipality issued more than 238 instant offences related to public hygiene.

"The campaign reflects the commitment of the municipal system in Abu Dhabi to ensure safety and health of the community, meet all health requirements and maintain public hygiene in accommodations, commercial outlets, restaurants and all facilities in connection with community members. At the same time, the department is following up warnings issued to violators to redress the offences and ensure that they observe all standards of security, public health and safety," said Mohammed Ali Al Mansouri, Manager of Al Wathbah Municipal Centre.

He said the move is municipal endeavors to raise the community awareness about healthy practices, and ensure the highest standards of living and decent life for the entire population.

Elaborating on the unhygienic living conditions found by the inspection team, Al Mansouri said: "Most violations are related to workers' accommodations that were found to be overcrowded, unclean and infested with insects and rodents."

The municipality has drawn up systematic plans to combat such unhealthy practices where a dedicated working team from the Public Health Division in Al Wathba Municipal Centre has been formed to curb such practices and maintain a healthy environment.

The campaign of combating the problem of congested accommodations in the areas affiliated to Al Wathba Municipal Centre has been going on since 2014. The campaign aims at achieving certain objectives such as eliminating the practice of bachelors and families thronging residential neighborhoods, removing all forms of squatter settlements in residential villas, and helping residential neighbourhoods to get rid of companies' accommodations.

Al Mansouri added: "Such overcrowding has brought about many problems and challenges such as exacerbating the very phenomena of overcrowding, building random residential units, outlawed appurtenances and unlicensed partitions falling short of healthy standards. Other drawbacks include spotting large-scale health offences, and distorting the urbanised outlook of the city, in addition to the spread of multitudes of satellite dishes on rooftops, and lack of security and safety standards in disorderly accommodations."
