House speaker, Hungarian counterpart discuss ties, regional developments

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Speaker of the Lower House of Parliament, Atef Tarawneh, on Wednesday discussed with his Hungarian counterpart Laszlo Kover, the latest developments in the region, and means to forge closer ties between the two countries in various domains.

Tarawneh stressed Jordan's interest to boost cooperation with Hungary and voiced admiration of the political, economic and scientific progress achieved by the East European nation.

He also thanked Hungary for the 400 scholarships offered to Jordanian university students in various levels of study every year, adding that this reflects confidence in Hungarian universities.

Tarawneh voiced Jordan's willingness to benefit from Hungary's expertise in generating energy through nuclear plants.

He also spoke about reforms that have been achieved by Jordan despite the current developments in the region as well as the difficult economic situation.

Jordan, he added, has become the third largest host country of refugees in the world, noting that the refugees are placing increasing pressure on the Kingdom's infrastructure.

On the situation in the region, Tarawneh said that all crises in the region resulted from the failure to find a just and comprehensive solution to the Palestinian issue.

The Hungarian parliament speaker said his country was interested in boosting its relations with Jordan, pointing to the role that could be played by parliamentary committees in both countries in further enhancing bilateral ties.

He also praised reforms that have been achieved by Jordan under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah II.
