Woman suffers serious burns after LPG leak at RAK home

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) An Emirati woman in her sixties sustained serious burn injuries after the kitchen of her house went up in flames due to an LPG cylinder leak.

An official source with the RAK civil defence department told Khaleej Times the victim was alone at home when the fire erupted at an early hour on Tuesday.

"The Central Operations Room, having been alerted of the incident, rushed to the site and shifted the woman to the intensive care unit of Saqr hospital for treatment."

She suffered 95 per cent burns and some burns are dangerously deep, as per the forensic report, he said, adding that the woman has been transferred to another hospital in Abu Dhabi specialised in treating burns.

The official said the whole house was gutted.

He urged the public to make sure that all LPG cylinders are turned off before going to bed. "Any unexpected gas leak may lead to suffocation or serious fires, burns and casualties."

Abu Saleh, a neighbour of the victim, said the old woman was alone as her children are living in separate houses with their families, and there was no housemaid with her.

"There are many horrific accidents involving LPG cylinders. The validity and durability of cylinders should be checked on a regular basis by the supply company and the bodies concerned."

Reiterating the same, Abu Ali, an Emirati, said one of his friends suffered 30 per cent burns in a similar fire due to an LPG cylinder leak. "Any manipulation of LPG cylinders should be dealt with zero tolerance," he added. ahmedshaaban@khaleejtimes.com
