Family violence cases on the rise in Ajman

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) Cases of domestic violence and child abuse are on the rise in Ajman, with higher number of cases reported in 2014 as compared to 2013 and the dangerous trend continuing in 2015, a top police official has revealed.

According to Captain Dr Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director of Social Police Section, 168 cases of wife-beating were reported in 2014 - an increase of 24 over the number of such cases reported in 2013.

Fifteen cases of children abused by parents were reported in 2014, while no such cases were reported in 2013.

In 2014, Dr Al Suwaidi said, the section received 26 children exposed to sexual, physical and psychological abuse, and negligence. The section had received just eight such cases in 2013.

More than 55 cases were reported directly to the section, while the rest were referred by other police stations and departments.

Domestic violence

The section has a dedicated number 050-8973223 for victims of domestic violence.

The section, Dr Al Suwaidi said, managed to settle 80 per cent of such cases by making husbands sign undertakings to never repeat the offence.

The rest of the cases, he said, were referred to the Ajman Public Prosecution.

Child abuse

The police first interrogate parents in cases of child abuse. A thorough probe is then conducted involving forensics, interrogation and evidence. If parents are found guilty, they are referred to the public prosecution.

Dr Al Suwaidi said the number of child abuse cases has increased, but it cannot be termed a phenomenon in a society that is home to 200 nationalities.

The section received 100 sexual and physical abuse cases in schools and educational institutions.
