QRC completes Gaza college project

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Qatar Red Crescent (QRC) has finished construction and furnishing of a new building for College of Ability Development in Khan Younis, southern Gaza.

The project is part of QRC's programme to develop and rehabilitate Gaza's higher education institutions with $5m from Al Fakhoora Campaign and the GCC Programme for Reconstruction of Gaza, under the supervision of Islamic Development Bank.

Dr Jean Calder, Dean of the college, described the launch of the expansion project in 2013 as a distinct event, as it helped improve the college's environmental and educational settings.

"We had great difficulties in the past. The old building was too small and not fit for disabled students. The new one is bigger and allows the management to hold student activities," she added. She said the college seeks to introduce disability services instructors. "Both academic and administrative staff are happy that the building was completed in record time. This will help us add classrooms and enrol more students. The college will work hard to develop programmes and services towards its mission of providing the local community with well-trained graduates specialised in disabilities."

Engineer Abdullah Al Madhoun, QRC's supervisor of the project, said the $340,000 initiative involved building and furnishing two additional floors, with special facilities for disability-convenient access.

The project, he said, will hopefully achieve its goals of offering new educational tools for the management and students, helping them do any activities and events on a larger scale.

"I feel happy for the inauguration of the building, which is very beneficial for me as a student. The QRC-built premises creates a student-friendly atmosphere and connects classrooms," said Afrah Al Garow, a Palestinian student.
