Qatar- Vodafone contest winners receive trophies, cash prizes


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Winners of Vodafone's second literary competition were awarded trophies and cash prizes in the presence of Minister of Culture and Heritage H E Dr Hamad bin Abdulaziz Al Kuwari.

The competition, 'I treated you with honesty, guidance and integrity', which comes from a verse in a poem written by Qatar's Founder Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani, was launched last December to coincide with the theme of National Day celebrations.

Alaa Abdelmonem Ibrahim won the first place with a cash prize of QR50,000 in the story collection category. Usama Abdelfatah Al Shazly got the second place with QR30,000 and Shamaa Shaheen Al Kuwari in the third place with QR20,000.

In the short story category, Hajaj Ramadan Nassar won the first place with QR20,000, Mohammed Saif El Dawla in the second place with QR15,000 and Ahmed Ibrahim Abualala in the third place with QR10,000.

Sheikh Dr Khalid bin Thani Al Thani, Chairman, Vodafone Qatar, and Kyle Whitehill, CEO of the company, presented trophies and certificates to winners and appreciation mementos to those who ensured the initiative's success.

The ceremony witnessed an outstanding performance by award-winning sand drawing artist Shaima Al Mughairy and a poem by writer Mohammed Yacoub Al Yousef inspired by the competition's title.

Mohammed Al Yami, Director, External Affairs, Vodafone Qatar, said, "What started out as a humble idea to play a role in reviving and preserving the heritage of Qatar which is key to Qatar National Vision 2030, now in its second year, the competition has grown to become a successful means of preserving the Arabic language and encouraging creative writing which are important threads of our Arab culture and tradition.

"The annual competition, which coincides with National Day, is giving citizens and residents a means to express love for this great nation."

Vodafone received more than 120 submissions which were assessed by an independent panel of judges, headed by Dr Fatima Al Suwaidi, also Assistant Dean of Outreach & Engagement, College of Arts & Sciences, Qatar University. The winning submissions will be posted on Vodafone's website and social media for the public to enjoy reading.
