Omani shooter Siham bags gold


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Oman's Siham al Hasani was bang on target to claim the first individual gold medal for the host nation as she claimed the top honours in the 10m air rifle event of the GCC Women's Games at the Ghala Shooting Range on Tuesday.

Siham collected 205.6 points on the third day of the event to win the gold medal while Kuwait's Maryam Erzouqi took silver with 201.8 and Qatar's Aisha al Suwaidi won bronze with 178.4.

In-form Siham then teamed up with Khadija al Jahafi and Amina al Tarshi to claim a bronze in the team event with a total of 1206.2.

Bahrain won the gold with the trio of Lulwa Yusuf Sabika Mubarak and Sara al Doseri garnering 1219.2 points. The Qatari trio of Aisha al Suwaidi Bahya al Hamad and Aisha al Mutawa took the silver medal with a score of 1214.2.

After the gold-medal win Siham said 'I am very happy and I hope my gold medal will help Omani sportspersons aspire for more glory.'

In another medal event Oman's riders claimed silver in the equestrian endurance race that was held over an 80km route in Barka. The UAE riders took the gold and Qatar won bronze in the contest featuring 22 riders from four countries - Kuwait being the fourth one.

Meanwhile at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex (SQSC) Oman's tennis star Fatma al Nabhani guaranteed a medal for herself in the doubles event partnering Sarah al Balushi.

Only four pairs including two from Oman are competing in the doubles event. The other Omani pair comprises Maryam al Balushi and Samar al Bakry.

Fatma and Sarah beat the UAE-Kuwait duo of Fatma al Janahi and Sarah Bahbahani 6-0 6-1 to record their second successive win and assure Oman a medal win. Oman's Fatma and Sarah will play Maryam and Samar on Wednesday with a victory set to fetch the top-seeded pair the gold medal.

In another match Qatar's Ola Mourad and Mobaraka al Naimi beat Maryam and Samar 6-0 6-3.

Fatma also began her singles campaign on Tuesday with a swift 6-1 6-0 win over Maryam to enter the quarterfinals. A total of eight players are taking part in the singles event.

Elsewhere Oman got off to a winning start in the handball competition with a 16-11 win over Kuwait while it lost its second successive match in basketball succumbing to a 46-60 verdict against Bahrain.

Also on Tuesday the athletics competition for the physically-challenged got underway at the SQSC.
