Kuwait- Amir keen to protect youth against extremism


(MENAFN- Arab Times) KUWAIT CITY March 5 (KUNA): Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister sheikh Mohammad Al- Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah on Thursday stressed keenness by His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al- Sabah on protecting Kuwaiti youth against extremist thinking. During a meeting with chairman and members of the committee on rehabilitation of people with extremist thinking at the Central Prison the Minister highlighted efforts to attract youth to moderate thoughts and tolerant teachings of Islam through cultural social and recreational programs. He said His Highness the Amir is highly concerned with releasing Kuwaiti Fayiz Al-Kandari detained at Guantanamo Bay through intensive ceaseless contacts on the international level. Sheikh Mohammad Al-Khaled lauded committee for dealing with inmates with extremist thoughts at the Central Prison directing them to the right path as part of the reform and rehabilitation course adopted by the state through the Interior Ministry.

The Minister also called for a rehabilitation strategy ''to protect our sons against extremist thinking'' together with enhancing cooperation with relevant bodies in friendly states. He called for setting up a specialized center to counter extremist thinking on the social level. Head of the Committee Interior Ministry''s Assistant Undersecretary for Correctional Institutions and Provisions Implementation Major General Khaled Al-Deen and members expressed gratitude to the Minister for his support to their efforts. Meanwhile Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Sheikh Mohammad Khaled Al- Hamad Al-Sabah received on Thursday a letter from UK Home Department Secretary Theresa May on bilateral security relations and the expected application of the UK e-visa system for Kuwaitis.

The letter was handed to Sheikh Mohammad during his reception of the UK Ambassador to Kuwait Matthew Lodge the Interior Ministry''s Security Media Department said in a press statement. It added that Sheikh Mohammed discussed with Lodge several issues of common interest. Both sides affirmed depth of cooperation between the two countries. It noted that the letter of the UK Secretary addressed bilateral security cooperation and the UK application of e-visa system for Kuwaitis seeking to travel to the UK which will start this year
