Defending champs Qadsia remain on top of AFC Cup group with Irbil win

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) Kuwait's Qadsia defeated Iraq's Irbil, 1-0, in the AFC Cup on Wednesday to go three points clear at the top of Group C thus maintaining the hope of defending their sole title.

Irbil were looking to avenge last year's defeat but despite performing well in the first half they were unable to breach their opponents' defence.

However, Qadsia eventually made their dominance count in the second half when Qadsia's Subotic played a lovely passing move with Fahed Al-Ibrahim in the 78th minute before finding the back of the net with an unstoppable left-foot strike from 25 yards.

The sole goal secured a second successive win for the holders after their 2-0 win over Turkmenistan's Ahal FC on matchday one.

"I'm extremely happy with the victory today because it's an important win for us. We played against a good team who were well organized and that's why we couldn't get an easy victory tonight," said Qadsia SC coach Antonio Puche.

"Our players had good concentration and our efforts were rewarded by scoring the winning goal and getting the three points from the match. This win will give us a big push especially as we put in a lot of effort to achieve it." Qadsia held on and now sit three points clear on top of the group with six points from two games, three points ahead of Irbil and Tajikistan's FC Istiklol, who defeated Ahal 2-1 in the day's other Group C encounter.
