Handwriting features of Omanis being studied for forensic use

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) The forensic laboratory under the Directorate General of Criminal Inquiries and Investigations is conducting a study to understand the different handwriting characteristics of Omanis. According to the directorate the results of the detailed study could help in criminal investigations.

Speaking to Muscat Daily Saqar Alzaabi a forensic document examiner with the lab's Questioned Document Examination section said 'The study is being conducted to find out about the handwriting pattern of citizens irrespective of sex age and even geographic region.

'Every respondent is required to fill up a specially designed form. These respondents form a representative sample who have been chosen from different parts of Oman and include men and women of different ages and educational backgrounds.'

He added 'The study will help us analyse any document that comes to us for forensic investigation. It is not necessary that it will help us zero in on the culprit but may help us identify whether the handwriting is of a man or a woman determine the writer's age or the part of the country he is from. 'We won't create a database but the idea is to understand the handwriting features [of different people].'

For example the letter 'M' may be written by many persons in a similar way explained Alzaabi.

'In this study handwriting features have been classified on the basis of different class and individual characteristics. In the class category we will look at similarities shared by a group of people who may have gone to the same school or belong to the same geographical region. They could be even from the same family. In the individual category we will look at the characteristics unique to an individual that he or she has developed during his/her lifetime.

'The handwriting expert will draw conclusions based on the number and value found during the study' Alzaabi added. The study which began in January this year will be conducted over a period of two years.
