(MENAFN- QNA) The National Human Rights Committee in Qatar and the Department of Public Liberties and Human Rights at Aljazeera Media Network will organize a regional symposium on "Freedom of Opinion and Expression in the Arab World; Reality and Aspiration" on March 22-23 on the occasion of the Arab Day for Human Rights.
The symposium examines the complexities of exercising the right of freedom of opinion and expression and the impact it has on the full enjoyment of all peoples, without discrimination, of the fundamental rights and freedoms contained in international human rights instruments.
It also attempts to shed light on the best practices that states, civil society and media organizations follow to ensure the respect and application of these rights and to combat hate speech, intolerance, discrimination and lack of public awareness.
The Symposium will provide a forum for a number of national human rights institutions, non-governmental organizations, intellectuals, activists and journalists to discuss the issue of freedom of opinion and expression in the Arab world in a serious and scientific manner.
The symposium also aims to explore the role to be played by national human rights institutions, media and human rights organizations to promote respect for and protection of freedom of opinion and expression, and to increase the understanding of the positive patterns and practices used around the world in relation to the exercise of freedom of expression and the respect of other rights and freedoms enshrined in international humanitarian law and international human rights law.
It will discuss ways to promote strategic partnerships with national institutions and international mechanisms to ensure the protection of human rights and media organizations against the Ten Major Threats of freedom of opinion.
