Qatar- Lekhwiya extend QSL lead


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Defending champions Lekhwiya overcame a stiff challenge from Al Kharaitiyat to gain full points and maintain their position at the top of the summit in the Qatar Stars League, while second-placed Al Sadd drew 3-3 with Al Ahli in round 20 matches.

Yesterday, playing at their home ground, Lekhwiya struck nine minutes into the second half through Sebastian Soria.

The win took Lekhwiya's tally to 48 points from 20 matches in the 14-team league which is played on a double leg basis. Al Sadd now has four points less than the leaders.

At Al Sadd Stadium, the hosts were staring at defeat till the fifth minute of injury time, but playmaker Khalfan Ibrahim bailed them out with a goal to give them one point from the match.

Earlier goals from Alain Dioko (42, 84th minute) and Mojtaba Kordgheshlaghi (31) gave Al ahli edge. Al Sadd two other goals came from Musab Kamal (24) and Edinaldo Libanio (45).

While in the other matches, Al Arabi, playing at their home ground, edged Al Wakrah 1-0 to pick up their sixth win of the league and take their points to 25 points and bounce to the eight place.

Paulo Sergio netted the match winner for Al Arabi in the 69th minute.

Struggling Wakrah, who have just four wins, from 20 matches, are in the second last place with just 16 points in the kitty.

At Lekhwiya Stadium, a goal from Cho Youngcheol in the 78th minute helped qatar SC register a 1-0 win over El Jaish. Both Qatar SC and El Jaish now have 34 points after 20 matches.
