Large cooking appliances are highly influenced by the new housing completions. In Japan before the VAT increase in April 2014 from 5% to 8% consumers who were planning to build or purchase houses had already done so which leaves lower demand for large cooking appliances. This reflects the -1% growth in volume terms in this category in 2014. The new housing completion between January and November in 2014 declined by 8% compared with the same time period in the previous year. Large cooking appliances managed to minimise the damage caused by the devastating pulled demand for new houses by aggressively encouraging renovating houses.

Competitive Landscape

Fuji Industrial remained in the lead in 2014 with a 26% volume share which was one percentage point higher than in 2013. As a cooker pioneer and specialist the company enjoyed a dominant position with a share over 60% in both built-in and freestanding units with a focus on built-in units. As other cooker hoods manufacturers struggled to increase shares in 2014 when new housing completions plunged (especially after the April tax increase) the company focused on the house remodelling market as a main source to generate revenue. Additionally Fuji Industrial strengthened its partnership with gas companies which own showrooms. The company attempted to capture consumers who visit the showrooms for hobs. As the integration between hobs and cooker hoods serves to increase loyal customers for the cooker hoods specialist more exposure in the showrooms is vital to capitalise the opportunities.
