Food security prominent theme of Oman's Expo Milano pavilion


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Oman will be participating in Expo Milano 2015 to be held from May 1 to October 31 this year in Milan Italy.

Addressing a press conference at the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI) headquarters on Wednesday Mohsin bin Khamis al Balushi advisor in MoCI and the commissioner general of Oman's pavilion at the event said 'Oman will be participating [in the event] along with 148 countries and some specialised regional and international organisations in Expo Milano from May 1 to October 31. 

'The sultanate's pavilion will embody the achievements of the country under the rule of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said besides showcasing future plans of the public and private institutions related to food security. The main theme of the expo will be 'Feeding the Planet Energy for life'.'

Balushi said that the country's pavilion will have four sections: Oman's diverse landscape; From the mountains to the coast; Riches of the sea; and Sharing food: Home and harvest.  'Our pavilion will be located in an area that will allow a majority of visitors to visit us. We had to do a lot of homework on what the Europeans are interested in seeing. Italian experts are training our representatives for this expo' he added.

The country's participation in the event comes in accordance with the directives of H E Yousuf bin Alawi bin Abdullah Minister Responsible for Foreign Affairs and chairman of the ministerial committee supervising the preparation for participation in the event and H E Dr Ali bin Masoud bin Ali al Sunaidy Minister of Commerce and Industry chairman of Riyada (Public Authority for the Small and Medium Enterprises Development) and a member of the ministerial committee. In addition to showcasing sultanate's achievements in various fields the event will also exhibit the richness and diversity of Omani cuisine.

A group of Omani youth who own coffee shops and restaurants have been selected in coordination with the secretariat of the commissioner of the sultanate's pavilion and Riyada to run and operate the Omani pavilion for six months during the event in collaboration with an Italian partner.

In coordination with Riyada few SMEs specialising in food and crafts industries will also be exhibiting and marketing their products at the Milan pavilion.

The Ministry of Tourism and Oman Air have also prepared a promotional plan to promote the country as a unique and promising destination in order to attract Italian and European visitors. The programme will be launched in Milan on March 12.

The most important event to be witnessed at the pavilion will be the National Day celebration on July 25 which shall be subject to the directives of the ministerial committee and the approval of the Cabinet.

The celebrations will be attended by a delegation headed by H E Dr Fuad bin Jaafar bin Mohammed al Sajwani Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries H E Ahmed bin Nasser bin Hamad al Mehrzi Minister of Tourism and Balushi.
