Qatar- Brusewitz rings in commanding performance at CHI Al Shaqab

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Germany's Thomas Brusewitz yesterday continued to impress with his vaulting skills as the 20-year-old retained his top spot on the points chart on day two of the CHI Al Shaqab, the region's premier equestrian competition.

For the second day running, Brusewitz found perfect rhythm with his 'veteran' ride Airbus 1 to hold on to the top spot in the 13-entry card after yesterday's technical test of the vaulting competition.

The 20-year-old yesterday managed a tally of 7.190 points with lunger Irina Lenkeit to wind up day two with an overall tally of 7.636 points.

On Monday, Brusewitz scored 8.082 in the compulsory routine to go top of the points table.

Brusewitz's compatriot Erik Oese - with ride Down Under - yesterday remained in contention when he managed to score 7.126 points in the technical test for an overall score of 7.451 points.

Austria's Stefan Csandl dropped to fifth spot yesterday when he finished with 7.003 points from his routines exhibited in front of four judges at Al Shaqab's Indoor Arena.

Despite a sluggish outing, Csandl is third overall with a score of 7.432 points.

Brusewitz's brother Viktor improved a notch from Monday by securing fourth spot yesterday with ride Rockhard H. The German vaulter yesterday won a score of 7.121 for an overall tally of 7.384.

Brusewitz said he was satisfied with his routines yesterday.

"Today was okay for me. I had some mistakes but the technical test was really good so I am happy," Brusewitz said after finishing his routine on 'Airbus 1'.

"It's quite difficult because we have two new moves. And we didn't have that much training. So it was the first time in the competition that we used it," he added.

"It's cool that this event is in Doha. It feels good to be on the leaderboard. In the freestyle, we will see what happens. I am excited for tomorrow," the German vaulter said when asked about today's routines.

When asked about the improvement in his brother Viktor's scores, Brusewitz said: "Yes, nice to see my brother come up from fifth to fourth today. I am happy about that."

Brusewitz refrained from predicting a winning score in today's final vaulting routines.

"It is hard to say what the winning score would be since I haven't seen the rest of the vaulters in action," Brucewitz said. "Last year I fall off in the freestyle still I came third. This year it's been better," he remarked.

Brusewitz was full of praise for his ride 'Airbus 1'.

"Airbus is a great horse. For me he is a perfect horse. We've been working together for a very long time," Brusewitz said.

Csandl who was second on Monday dropped to three yesterday in overall standings.

"Overall I had one mistake, and if I hadn't committed that mistake then you would never know where I'd be right now (on the points table)," Csandl said.

"Still I am quite happy where I am," the Austrian added. "Last year, I was eighth here and this year I am third. I overtook four people. If I do my stuff perfect tomorrow then I will be happy with myself and that's the most important part for me.

"I wouldn't mind being first (smiles). I think there are 12 very good vaulters out there in the class. I don't know where we are but I hope we can do a good job," he added.

In the female competition, British vaulter Joanne Eccles yesterday found ride W H Bentley in good form as she pushed overnight leader Anna Cavallaro to second spot.

Eccles yesterday managed a tally of 8.019 points to grab the top spot with an overall score of 8.045 points.

Veteran Italian vaulter Cavallaro produced a tally of 7.624 points in the technical test to drop to second spot with an overall score of 7.954 points.

Swiss vaulter Simone Jaiser scored 7.280 points yesterday for an overall card of 7.620, a tally good enough to give her the third spot in the standings ahead of today's final day of action in vaulting.

In the Pas de Deux competition, world famous Austrian pair Jasmin Lindner and Lukas Wacha yesterday grabbed the top spot with 8.820 points while Eccless sisters Hannah and Joanne had to settle for the second spot with a tally of 8.307.

In third spot is Austrian duo Theresa Thiel and Csandl who managed 8.165 points after their 'freestyle 1' outing.

Lindner, who was here last year, said: "This has been one of our most difficult routines. But we are proud of our performances."

Joaane said: "Yeah, it's been good so far. Technical was really good for me. You can never say what's going to happen but we look forward to the routines tomorrow. The pairing was really good though it was messy. So far, we've had a good tour."

Csandl said: "The routine was very, very good. We trained once yesterday. Me and Teresa, we did it really well. If we can do it well together, then that's the most important part for us."

are still at the top with overall score of 7.929 after two days of competitions.

Italy's Team CIM Italy is in second place with 7.018 points while Sweden's Team Svea Vaulting is in third place.
