Qatar- Minister hails private sector for promoting arts, culture

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Minister of Culture, Arts and Heritage H E Dr Hamad bin Abdulaziz Al Kuwari has hailed the role of the private sector in promoting culture and arts in Qatar.

Addressing the culmination of the third annual Al Asmakh International Symposium of Art yesterday at Wyndham Grand Regency Doha Hotel, Dr Al Kuwari said, "The private sector can play an important role in cultural events if they have the desire and willingness to support such activities as one of the vital elements of society and this is what Al Asmakh has done by organising the symposium for the third year."

The symposium is one of the events Regency Art, a non-profit private art entity, has been organising year round to support artists and collect new artworks which would be part of its permanent collection to be displayed in a museum being planned.

The Minister said the symposium was "one of the important art events being held regularly in Qatar.

"Every year we see development and this year participants are not only from the GCC but also from other countries in different continents. This shows that Doha has become a cultural capital by hosting such important event. The huge attendance and the variety of paintings and diversity of issues they address reflect this fact," he said.

Hassan Ibrahim Al Asmakh, Vice President, Regency Group Holding, said the symposium is organised to promote the art and culture sector in line with Qatar National Vision 2030.

He thanked sponsors and participants for their contribution to the success of the symposium on its third year.

Yesterday's event witnessed the unveiling of 100 paintings by 48 artists from 28 countries who worked for a week in Sealine using a wide range of media and dealing with diverse subjects.

Saudi artist Nouf Al Ibrahim's mixed media artworks depict Arab women in abaya she refers to as metaphor for physical and mental covering of women, a concept she started working a year ago. This was the second time she participated in the symposium and said it was "a great experience meeting artists from all over the world sharing experiences".

Gala Caki from Serbia was of the same view. "The symposium was well organised and one of the best I have attended. It is good for a young artist like me to learn from other artists. I'm lucky to be here."

In her paintings, Caki creates people that don't exist who she says are drawn from her imaginary world to live for a long time.

Minister of Education and Higher Education H E Dr Mohammed Abdul Wahed Ali Al Hammadi, Minister of Energy and Industry H E Dr Mohamed bin Saleh Al Sada and Qatar Tourism Authority Chairman Issa bin Mohammed Al Mohannadi were among the guests at the event attended by prominent Qatari artists.

The exhibition is open to the public today from 10am to 8pm at Wyndham Grand Regency Doha's Al Qasr ballroom.
