Small cooking appliances declined by 1% in volume terms in 2014 despite the current trend of cooking at home. The main factor that negatively affected the category was the conversions of some product features into other appliances. For example toasters experienced a -4% volume decline in 2014 because combination microwaves are equipped with a toasting function and in Japan 85% of microwaves sold in 2014 were combination formats. Such a trend was seen in other categories including mini ovens bread makers and electric grills. The conversion of functions into one appliance is highly related to the size of kitchens in Japan. As Japanese kitchens are relatively small consumers opt for appliances that provide as many product features as possible.

Competitive Landscape

Zojirushi remained its leading position in small cooking appliances with a 19% volume share in Japan in 2014. The company owns a wide range of products in this category which helps it maintain its market share. Zojirushi in 2014 strengthened its NPDs in rice cookers to capitalise on the premiumisation trend and managed to increase the volume share in rice cookers by one percentage point to 25%.
